LEARNING THE 'LANGUAGE OF THE STARS'

To better learn this language, it is first necessary for us to know the underlying alphabet that this astrological language is comprised of.
i) The PLANETS represent a specific principle of dynamic energy that tends to correspond to a specific aspect of the personal psyche. This means for example that the emotions and feelings of an individual can best be studied by noting the placement of the Moon in the astrological Birth Chart. Alternatively, their capability of loving and being loved or them appreciating or being appreciated can be better revealed through observing the Venus placement, etc.
Note: It has to be immediately stated here that although the planets of the birth chart do indeed refer to the eight physical planets of our Solar System, astrology’s subjective, symbolic and more person-centered approach actually considers TEN planets in total - i.e. the Sun and Moon being added to Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. (Yes, Pluto is still considered as a planet astrologically, although not so astronomically!) Each one of these ‘planets’ represents a pure principle of universal energy that are thought to be imprinted in some way into an individual’s core subtle being at the moment of their first breath.
When (and if) new planets are discovered (such as Uranus, Neptune and Pluto were after the trans-Saturnian years) astrologers have to start the long, slow and painstaking process of attempting to identify and define just what facet of the human psyche the new planet represents, or even whether its effect can be more felt on a more personal or collective realm of expression.
In any Birth Chart the location of each planet is defined by that planet’s precise location within the Zodiac at the moment of birth. Being that the Zodiac is a symbolic 360-degree circle that symbolically surrounds our planet and is divided into twelve equal Signs, this means that each Sign can be conceived as being exactly 30 degrees long. This being so, it is relatively easy for us to calculate the precise degree in which any of the ten astrological planets are located at any one moment in time. To more easily achieve this an astrologer will rely on accurate scientific data provided in terms of latitude and longitude, as defined by an astronomer’s Ephemeris.
ii) The SIGNS OF THE ZODIAC are twelve symbolic energy zones around the Earth that significantly modify the natural expression of the planetary principles. These twelve zones are located along the plane of the ECLIPTIC, which is the apparent path of the Sun as it travels through space, around our planet. The twelve Signs are ARIES, TAURUS, GEMINI, CANCER, LEO, VIRGO, LIBRA, SCORPIO, SAGITTARIUS, CAPRICORN, AQUARIUS and PISCES. As indicated earlier, the twelve Signs make up a 360-degree Ecliptic; each Sign occupies 30 degrees each. The Zodiac begins at 0 degrees Aries, moves on by 30 degrees to 0 degrees Taurus and so on until 30 degrees of Pisces become 0 degrees of Aries again.
iii) The HOUSES are twelve imaginary boundaries projected onto the Earth, which correspond in essence to the twelve Signs of the Zodiac. Each HOUSE represents a specific field of life experience through which the combined Planetary/Sign influences are focused. Fields of life experience covered include Physical self, Possessions, Home, Partnerships, Career, etc.
iv) The ASPECTS are the angular relationships made between the Planets, as placed in the Zodiac and viewed from the Earth. The nature of the aspect made between any two planets will reveal the degree to which the principles of energy symbolized by those planets are in harmony or disharmony with one another. On a psychological level for example these will indicate how well the principles of planetary expression are integrated into the psyche of that person, or not.
